The Kenyan sugar industry faces a potential nationwide shutdown as workers, through the Kenya Union of Sugarcane Plantation and Allied Workers (KUSPAW), have issued a strike notice demanding Sh10.8 billion in unpaid wages and benefits.

• KUSPAW Secretary General Francis Wangara announced the strike will begin on Thursday, escalating to an industry-wide paralysis if demands are not met within one week.
• The dispute centers on unhonored Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) following the transition of state-owned sugar factories to private investors.
• Wangara accused some new millers of deliberate salary reductions, violating labor laws by blocking union activities, and stopping statutory deductions of union dues. He appealed to President William Ruto for intervention.
