Calls are growing for stronger regulations to eliminate lead in paints across Africa and globally, with a two-day capacity-building workshop held in Nairobi bringing together representatives from 25 African countries. The initiative aims to push governments to adopt or strengthen lead paint regulations, given the severe health impacts of lead exposure on children.
- The workshop was organized by Lead Exposure Elimination Project (LEEP), Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), and UN Environment Programmeās (Unepās) Chemicals and Health branch, with support from Bloomberg Philanthropies.
- Dr. Clare Donaldson, co-executive director of LEEP, stated that one in three children globally has blood lead levels above the World Health Organization's (WHO) intervention level, causing significant harm to cognitive development.
- Kenya's Director of Chemicals and Minerals Industries at State Department of Industries, Purity Kamau, affirmed the government's commitment to eliminating lead in paints through appropriate policies and regulations.
- Kebs has already developed standards that meet WHO limits for lead-free paints, and major Kenyan paint companies like Basco Paints, Crown Paints, and Novel Paints manufacture lead-free products.
