The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has warned of a Sh22 billion funding gap that threatens the credibility of the upcoming 2027 general elections. This deficit risks crippling seven key preparatory activities crucial for free and fair polls.

The IEBC requires a total budget of Sh63 billion for the 2027 elections.
Commission Chairman Mr. Ethekon highlighted that activities like voter education, legal reforms, communication, security preparedness, staff training, and procurement of election materials are at risk.
The commission is also struggling with Sh4.9 billion in pending bills from the 2022 elections, leading to supplier reluctance and increased procurement costs, which compromises its ability to deliver its mandate effectively.
