Kenyans were shielded from higher electricity bills despite a significant increase in the use of expensive thermal power, thanks to a reduction in base tariffs by the energy sector regulator. The move prevented anticipated steep power bills that would have resulted from a surge in thermal power generation.
- 1,480.24 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of thermal power were generated in the year to December 2025, a 31 percent increase from the previous year.
- The director general of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra), Daniel Kiptoo, confirmed the downward revision of base tariffs.
- The base tariff for domestic customers consuming over 100 kWh a month dropped to Sh18.57 from Sh19.08 effective July 1 last year.
