The Kenyan government plans to offer tax relief to citizens earning less than Ksh30,000 per month, a move announced by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi. This initiative, which has the approval of President William Ruto, aims to stimulate economic demand by increasing disposable income for lower-earning Kenyans.

The tax reduction intends to alleviate the financial burden on individuals who struggle to cover essential expenses after paying various taxes such as PAYE, NSSF, NHIF/SHA, and the housing levy.
CS Mbadi stated that excessive taxation on this income bracket has stifled the economy, particularly at the grassroots level.
The plan comes as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) halted the filing of nil tax returns until the end of March, intending to convert non-filers into active taxpayers, noting that only 4 million out of 22 million registered individuals consistently meet their tax obligations.
