A united Kenyan opposition presented a memorandum to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), questioning the irregular extension of a multibillion-shilling contract for a polls system, just one week before the exit of Chief Executive Hussein Marjan.

The memorandum, delivered on January 28, alleged the extension of the contract for Smartmatic's Kenya Integrated Elections Management (Kiems) system was unlawful.
The opposition leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, and Martha Karua, demanded urgent investigation and accountability from the seven-member IEBC.
The contract extension, reportedly made in November 2024 when no commissioners were in office, is deemed illegal and irregular, potentially costing taxpayers billions.
