The luminous red supergiant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud has surprised astronomers by rapidly dimming and ejecting massive dust clouds, a change typically observed over millions of years, now occurring in just a decade.

• The star is over 1,500 times larger than the Sun and emits over 100,000 times more energy.
• Astronomers, including a team using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), discovered the changes began in recent years, with a "fresh cloud of dust" observed in 2024.
• New observations from 2026 suggest the presence of a hotter, smaller "blue twin" star orbiting WOH G64, which may be influencing its behavior, causing it to appear warmer and eject gas.
