The Kenyan government is facing significant backlash from students and tutors over increased fees in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions following a revision of costs under a new modular curriculum.
- According to Kenya Union of Technical and Vocational Education Trainees (KUTVET) chairman Geoffrey Obuoyela, annual tuition has nearly doubled from approximately KSh 56,000 to KSh 105,000, with some courses reaching up to KSh 400,000 annually.
- Public Secretary for TVET Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, however, disputes these claims, stating that fees were set after stakeholder consultations and that the modular system has not raised training costs.
- Dr. Muoria clarified that the government approved a standard charge of KSh 35,000 per module, asserting that a level four course, comprising two modules, would cost KSh 70,000, down from a previous high of KSh 121,181.
- The modular system, introduced in May 2025, aims to provide flexible, industry-relevant training, shorten programs, and recognize prior learning, with modules lasting 3-6 months.
