✨ Key Highlights

The National Bank of Rwanda (NBR) has issued a warning against using banknotes for decorative purposes like cash bouquets, echoing a similar caution from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). Both central banks highlight that folding, gluing, or otherwise defacing currency damages its integrity and leads to premature withdrawal, incurring avoidable costs.

  • The practices compromise currency integrity, rendering notes unsuitable for cash-handling equipment like ATMs and sorting machines.
  • Wilful defacement, mutilation or impairment of Rwandan currency is an offense under Law No. 68/2018 of 30/08/2018, while in Kenya, it risks up to three months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to Sh2,000 under Section 367A of Kenya’s Penal Code.
