Kisumu County has suspended all mining and quarrying activities following the tragic drowning of four young boys from the same family in an abandoned quarry on Sunday, February 8.

• The ban, effective immediately, covers murram and sand harvesting, and only operators with valid legal approvals and substantial safety standards will be considered to resume operations.
• Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o announced the formation of a task force with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to oversee compliance and enforce legal action against unlawful operations.
• The four brothers, aged between 8 and 15, drowned after one encountered difficulty while swimming in an unprotected quarry near Kudho Primary and Secondary School.
