The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has expressed strong opposition to the installation of speed cameras on major highways, including the Thika Super Highway, arguing that such measures are outdated and could increase accidents rather than improve safety.
- MAK stated that modern vehicles are designed for higher speeds with advanced safety features, making fluctuating speeds, potentially caused by cameras, a significant danger.
- The association believes these cameras are a "misplaced and potentially dangerous priority" and that "speed enforcement in such a controlled environment appears punitive rather than safety-driven."
- The National Transport and Safety Board (NTSA) began implementing this technology last year, following a six-month pilot phase in 2024, with motorists receiving mobile notifications and automatic fines for exceeding speed limits, such as Ksh3,000 for exceeding by 6 to 10 kilometres per hour.
