Kenya Power is losing an estimated Sh1 billion annually due to illegal connections, meter theft, and transformer vandalism in the Igembe South region of Meru County. This issue came to light during a tour by Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, leading to immediate interventions to address the widespread power theft.

• Kenya Power determined that Sh100 million is lost monthly to transformer theft alone, impacting revenue significantly.
• An investigation revealed approximately 8,000 bypassed or fraudulent meters and over 7,000 users operating without meters.
• Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, alongside PS Alex Wachira, resolved the issue after meeting with Meru Governor Isaack Mutuma and Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi, agreeing to restore removed transformers to support miraa farmers.
