A new peace plan backed by the US and the Quad nations – Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates – aims to end the Sudan war by facilitating an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and a path to civilian governance, with a proposed US$1.5 billion for reconstruction.

• The plan, announced by US president’s advisor on Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos in February 2026, has received preliminary approval from the Sudan’s Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
• The plan suggests coordinated withdrawals, with the RSF pulling back from areas in South Kordofan and around El-Obeid, and army units in Khartoum replaced by local police, monitored by a UN-led mechanism.
• Obstacles include the Sudanese army’s refusal to legitimize the RSF, deep mistrust between the warring parties, and continued external support for both sides, hindering a lasting political settlement.
