Kenya has launched a diplomatic campaign to secure a full nine-year term for Judge Phoebe Okowa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi initiating her 2027-2036 re-election bid during the African Union Executive Council Meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

• Prof. Okowa was elected to the ICJ in November 2025, becoming the first Kenyan and first African woman on the court.
• She is only the eighth woman in history to serve on the ICJ bench, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
• Mudavadi emphasized her distinguished academic background and vast experience in international law while seeking support from African states.
