The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) announced the start of trials for digital radio broadcasting, aiming to modernize Kenya's radio infrastructure. This initiative, launched on World Radio Day, will begin in Nairobi and run for one year.
- The transition to digital radio aims to alleviate congestion in the FM band, which currently supports approximately 300 licensed stations and reaches 98% of households.
- The CA established a regulatory framework in 2023 supporting Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB+) and Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM).
- Mast Rental Services activated the first DAB+ trial network in Nairobi in January 2026, carrying 14 radio programs.
- Digital radio, the radio equivalent of digital TV migration, bundles multiple radio stations into a single frequency block, while FM radio will continue to operate alongside the new digital system.
