The National Land Commission (NLC) has reserved over 12,000 acres of land in Mandera County for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to establish new military camps and training areas. This move comes as Kenya prepares to reopen its border with Somalia in April.

12,072 acres (parcel L.R. No. 33285) in Mandera County have been vested to the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The land is designated solely for military purposes, with the MoD required to submit a detailed land use and management plan to the NLC within 180 days.
The plan must protect local community interests, including access to grazing areas and water points, and maintain 10 percent tree cover.
In January, the NLC also reserved another 10,000 acres for military use in Garissa and Tana River counties.
