Retired Lieutenant General Daniel Opande of Kenya has been honored by Sierra Leone with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Rokel for his critical role in restoring peace during the country's civil war.

• Award bestowed by Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio, during the Sierra Leone Armed Forces Day and Investiture Ceremony.
• Lt Gen (Rtd) Opande served as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) from November 2000 to 2003.
• His leadership oversaw the disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration of thousands of combatants.
• He also served in peacekeeping missions in Namibia, Mozambique, and Liberia.
