The European Union has significantly intensified border checks on a baby milk ingredient imported from China following a major contamination scare linked to the toxin cereulide.

• The toxin cereulide was detected in batches of formula containing arachidonic acid oil, a key ingredient originating from China.
• Manufacturers including Nestle, Danone, and Lactalis have recalled products in over 60 countries.
• The European Commission stated that consignments from China will require an official certificate proving they are toxin-free, with 50% of shipments subject to physical checks for the next two months.
