A recent audit report by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has revealed that taxpayers are losing millions of shillings due to inefficiencies in the government's textbook procurement and distribution system for schools.

• The audit identified over Sh90.83 million in excess textbooks supplied to fewer than a thousand schools sampled, representing idle public resources.
• The National Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) commissioned this special audit, which reviewed textbook procurement and distribution between the 2020/2021 and 2023/2024 financial years across primary, junior, and secondary schools.
• While some schools receive unnecessary surplus textbooks, others face shortages, with undelivered books valued at Sh295.63 million, impacting the government's goal of a 1:1 textbook-to-learner ratio.
