The World Bank has committed $500 million (Sh64.6 billion) to significantly upgrade Nairobi's commuter rail system.

• The funding will support the transformation of the 57 km Nairobi Central–Thika commuter rail into a modern urban rail system.
• Kenya Railways and the Ministry of Roads and Transport will implement the project, with a total estimated cost of $1.7 billion (Sh219.3 billion).
• The project aims to improve mobility, safety, and create jobs within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area.
