Kenya Power is experiencing delays in its nationwide rollout of a new Optical Character Recognition (OCR) system due to customers locking their premises and meter boxes.

• The new OCR system aims to replace manual electricity meter reading by allowing personnel to scan meter displays instantly using mobile devices.
• Kenya Power is urging customers to grant authorized staff access to their meters to facilitate this digital transformation.
• This upgrade, which began deployment in Nairobi in November 2025, is expected to improve billing accuracy, speed, and consistency, and reduce disputes over estimated bills.
