An audit by Kenya's Auditor General has revealed that at least Sh1 billion may have been lost to ghost workers across eight Rift Valley counties over the past three years.
- The affected counties include Kajiado, Nandi, Samburu, Baringo, Nakuru, Bomet, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
- The audit, led by Auditor General Nancy Gathungu, identified that much of the fraudulent payments were made through manual payroll systems instead of the recommended Integrated Personnel and Payroll Database (IPPD).
- Irregularities also included payments to employees who had reached retirement age and the use of shared bank accounts for disbursements.
