President William Ruto has launched the next phase of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension, stating the Narok–Kisumu section is crucial for transforming Kisumu into a regional logistics hub. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 19, 2026, in Suswa, Narok County.

The 262.3km Narok–Kisumu SGR extension is a strategic investment aimed at lowering transport costs and strengthening Kenya's position as a regional trade gateway.
President Ruto highlighted that current SGR freight operations generate over Ksh1.3 billion monthly, with passenger revenue surpassing Ksh4 billion annually as of December 2025.
This extension is expected to reduce logistics costs, boost freight volumes, create jobs, and decongest roads by shifting cargo from trucks to rail, with future plans for a nearly 1,000km Mombasa to Malaba rail corridor.
