Over 10,000 buildings in Kenya are considered death traps due to corrupt officials, unqualified engineers, and rogue developers, according to the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) President, Eng. Shammah Kiteme.
- A 2022 NCA audit found 10,791 out of 14,895 sampled buildings unsafe.
- The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) and other professional bodies are calling for a national building register and scrutiny of officials at the Nairobi County's Urban Planning Department and the National Construction Authority (NCA).
- Kenya has recorded 87 building collapses in five years, causing an estimated 200 deaths and over 1,000 injuries.
