Kenya Power has explained why electricity bills remain high even when appliances are turned off, citing a phenomenon known as 'phantom loading' or 'vampire power'.

• Appliances like TVs, chargers, and microwaves continue to consume small amounts of electricity even when not in active use, as long as they are plugged in.
• Kenya Power CEO Joseph Siror highlighted that exceeding 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumption pushes households into higher, more expensive tariff bands.
• This continuous, unnoticed consumption, if significant enough, can elevate a household's usage into a more costly billing category.
