Residents of Murang’a Town are infuriated by a Sh5 fare increase on the Murang’a-Mukuyu matatu route, raising the cost from Sh10 to Sh15. This hike, which took effect on the morning of April 16, 2026, has caused significant distress to commuters.

• The fare increase translates to a collective loss of approximately Sh7,000 daily for commuters on this route, as highlighted by Mr Kanene Kabiru, a director at Rwathia Distributors.
• The price adjustment has also affected bodabodas (hike to Sh70 from Sh50) and tuktuks (increase to Sh30 from Sh20).
• Township MCA Machigo Karina views the matatu fare hike as a concerning indicator that prices for other essential commodities, such as foodstuff, may soon follow suit.
