A new Fisheries Management and Development Bill, 2023, has been introduced in the National Assembly to strengthen Kenya's fisheries sector and combat illegal fishing.
- The Bill seeks to establish the Kenya Fisheries Service and a Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Unit to improve oversight of Kenyan waters, particularly Lake Victoria and the Indian Ocean.
- Sponsored by Kimani Ichung’wah, Leader of the Majority Party, the legislation aims to promote sustainable utilization, enhance food security, and support livelihoods dependent on fishing.
- It addresses issues such as dwindling fish stocks, poor market access, and the need to streamline multiple licensing requirements currently imposed on fishermen, potentially reducing them from up to eight to one efficient system.
