Artisanal fishers in Kenya's Coast region are receiving a technological boost with the introduction of Anchored Fish Aggregating Devices (aFADs). This new system aims to replace traditional guesswork with precision, addressing challenges like rising fuel costs and declining fish catches.
- Six aFADs have been installed in Kwale County and five in Lamu County.
- The initiative is a collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
- This technology leverages fish behavior to attract pelagic species, with the goal of increasing catches, lowering production costs, and boosting incomes for small-scale fishers like Mr Lali Shee.
