Residents in Garissa and Tana River counties have refused to relocate from flood-prone areas along the Tana River, despite warnings and the devastating impact of recent floods.

• The floods, attributed to water release from upstream dams, have submerged farms and destroyed homes, displacing thousands of families since April 28, 2026.
• Victims, including Mzee Issa Malio Salakole and Ms Jane Habona Dhoyo, cited a lack of security, schools, and hospitals in the designated safer relocation areas as reasons for their refusal to move.
• Displaced individuals are facing severe shortages of food, shelter, and medical supplies, with children particularly vulnerable to diseases like diarrhea and vomiting.
