Wajir Stadium has been renamed Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium in honour of the first Cabinet minister from the Wajir region, whose life was tragically cut short shortly after his appointment.

• The renaming was announced by President William Ruto during the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2026.
• Ahmed Khalif was elected Wajir West MP in 2002 and appointed Minister for Labour in January 2003.
• His tenure as minister was one of the shortest in Kenyan history, ending just 20 days after his appointment due to a plane crash on January 24, 2003.
