The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has asserted its full capability to regulate Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Kenya before the Kisumu High Court. This comes as a case challenging the open-field cultivation and sale of genetically modified maize, commonly known as Bt maize, concludes its hearing.

The NBA, represented by its acting Director Josphat Muchiri, contends that Kenya possesses a robust legal framework for GMO regulation, ensuring public safety.
The legal challenge was filed by activists against the NBA, the Ministry of Agriculture, Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service, and the Council of Governors.
Parties are expected to submit written arguments by July, following the two-day hearing.
