An audit by the Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu has revealed that hundreds of retired county government employees in eight different counties are still receiving salaries and allowances, highlighting significant payroll weaknesses and financial risks.

• 76 employees in Embu County were among the highest number of affected staff still in service past retirement age as of May 30, 2025.
• The Office of the Auditor-General conducted the audit for the financial year ended June 30, 2025.
• The irregular payments were noted in Bomet, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu, Nyeri, Migori, Nyamira, and Embu counties, contravening public service regulations and potentially leading to financial loss.
