Kenya is moving closer to establishing its first National Marine Spatial Plan (MSP) after coastal stakeholders in five counties participated in critical validation meetings.

• The validation exercise reviewed proposals for a 20-year framework guiding the sustainable use of Kenya’s ocean space.
• Key organizations involved include the State Department for the Blue Economy and Fisheries and county governments of Kilifi, Kwale, Mombasa, Lamu, and Tana River.
• The MSP aims to balance economic development, environmental conservation, and social interests, while reducing conflicts among marine resource users like local communities and industrial fishers.
