British American Tobacco (BAT) is set to cut nearly a fifth of its global workforce, totalling 9,000 jobs, as part of a significant cost-cutting initiative.

• 5,500 jobs will be shed, and another 3,500 will be outsourced.
• The cuts are part of a drive to become “more digital and AI-focused” and are expected to save approximately $600m a year by 2028.
• The company is shifting focus to alternatives like vapes and nicotine pouches due to declining traditional cigarette sales.
