The Vatican has declared the traditionalist Society of St Pius X (SSPX) to be in schism, automatically excommunicating six bishops for performing consecrations without the approval of Pope Leo XIV.

• Six bishops, including Bishops Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay, have been excommunicated.
• The excommunications were announced on July 2 by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
• The SSPX, founded in 1970, rejects several teachings and reforms of the Second Vatican Council.
