Every year on July 1, thousands of Legio Maria of African Church Mission faithful undertake a sacred pilgrimage to Homa Bay prison to commemorate the release of their founder, Baba Simeo Melkio Messias (Ondeto).

• The pilgrimage commemorates the release of Ondeto from Homa Bay GK Prison in 1963.
• The faithful walk from various parts of the country, praying at the prison and then proceeding to St Margaret Chiga church.
• The procession includes symbolic elements like followers dressed as Archangel Michael, armed with wooden weapons, and carrying wooden keys.
