A Congolese national, Lumumba Ulundu Patrick, has been fined Sh10 million (or serve three years in prison) for defrauding a Chinese businesswoman of $1 million (approximately Sh156 million) by selling ordinary soil and rocks disguised as valuable tantalum-niobium ore.

• The scam involved shipping worthless soil and rocks to China instead of the promised 84 tonnes of tantalite.
• The convicted man, Lumumba Ulundu Patrick, was found guilty of obtaining money by false pretences by a court in Nairobi.
• The elaborate fraud used a fake mineral export scheme involving Sanjola Company Limited and involved illegal cross-stuffing of containers at the Mombasa Container Terminal.
