Residents and leaders in Lamu are demanding transparency and full participation in the proposed Sh2.2 trillion oil refinery project, citing a lack of public information and fears of being excluded from benefits.

• The project is linked to Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote and is reportedly planned for Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) land behind Lamu Port.
• Community representatives are calling for 70 percent of the estimated 6,000 jobs to be reserved for indigenous residents and for local businesses to be prioritized in procurement.
• Concerns have also been raised about potential environmental impacts, particularly on traditional fishing grounds, and the need to avoid the pitfalls experienced with the Lapsset corridor project.
