The Kenyan government has abandoned plans to build a second runway at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), citing cost-cutting measures and a lack of immediate necessity for the additional strip.

The project cost has been reduced from Sh260 billion to an estimated Sh154 billion without the second runway.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davies Chirchir stated the current runway is sufficient until at least 2029.
This decision reverses an earlier masterplan that included a new terminal and a second runway to boost JKIA's passenger capacity.
