The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) in Kenya has issued a stern warning that statements made online carrying hate speech or ethnic incitement will face the same legal repercussions as public speeches. This comes as inflammatory rhetoric escalates ahead of the 2027 General Election.

• NCIC Chairperson Kepha Nyamweya Omae emphasized that digital content has identical legal and social consequences to public declarations.
• The commission highlighted that while freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed, it is not absolute and is restricted by provisions against propaganda for war, incitement to violence, and hate speech.
• All Kenyans are urged to reject, report, and avoid amplifying divisive messages, as violations of the National Cohesion and Integration Act, including Section 62, carry penalties of criminal prosecution.
