Carbon-capturing concrete makes debut in Nairobi, but questions shadow the technology

The walkway looks like thousands of others across Kenya. But this one is different...
✨ Key Highlights
A new carbon-capturing concrete technology has debuted in Nairobi, with a walkway in Upper Hill showcasing the ability of infrastructure to remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
- The walkway, developed by ZEN Carbon in partnership with Octavia Carbon, uses Direct Air Capture to pull CO2 from the air, which is then mineralized and locked into concrete blocks, permanently storing the carbon.
- This technology aims to turn concrete, a major source of global emissions, into a climate solution.
- While the initial pilot project is small, covering 76 square metres and avoiding approximately 37.73 kilograms of CO2, it represents a step towards integrating climate solutions into everyday infrastructure.
