The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a stark warning that the University of Nairobi could face a catastrophic loss of up to 70% of its academic staff due to new Public Service Commission (PSC) retirement rules.

The new policy lowers the retirement age for professors from 74 to 70 and for senior lecturers and other academic staff from 74 to 65.
This potential exodus, following a freeze on recruitment since 2020 due to underfunding, could cripple teaching and research.
The union also cited concerns over the financial health of the University of Nairobi Pension Scheme, which is reportedly owed Sh11 billion.
