The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has threatened a nationwide lecturers' strike over delays in negotiating the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and proposed changes to the retirement age for academic staff.

The union opposes a Public Service Commission (PSC) circular from March 2026 that sets retirement ages at 70 for professors and associate professors, and 65 for other academic staff, fearing it will significantly reduce experienced academics.
UASU also rejected the government's counter-offer of Ksh3.1 billion for the CBA, deeming it insufficient.
The union highlighted similar issues at Moi University concerning delayed salary arrears, indicating broader labor unrest in public universities.
