Researchers in Kilifi County are testing a new home-based support program to improve the growth and development of malnourished infants after they leave the hospital.

• The IBAMI-2 study aims to determine if continued breastfeeding support can help mothers maintain exclusive breastfeeding for infants recovering from acute malnutrition.
• Led by Dr Martha Mwangome, the study builds on previous research that showed high breastfeeding rates in hospital but difficulties once mothers returned home.
• The current phase is a randomized controlled trial involving 250 mother-infant pairs, measuring infant weight gain at six months as the primary outcome.
