Kenya's Interior Ministry has identified 18 high-risk counties expected to face severe impacts from the anticipated El Niño rains in 2026, including floods, disease outbreaks, and food shortages.

• Nairobi, along with coastal counties like Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, Mombasa, and Kwale, are particularly vulnerable to urban flooding and rising sea levels.
• The Interior Ministry is also monitoring lake basin regions (Kisumu, Busia, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori) and drought-hit Rift Valley counties (Turkana, Baringo, West Pokot, Narok) for flooding and landslides.
• The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) warns of a heightened risk of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) across East Africa, including Kenya, due to El Niño-driven floods promoting mosquito breeding and livestock virus spread.
