Kenya has identified 18 counties as high-risk for flooding during the October–November–December (OND) short rains season due to an intensifying El Niño event.

• The National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) is coordinating the response plan, prioritizing vulnerable areas in the Rift Valley, Lake Basin, Coast, and North Eastern regions, including major cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
• The El Niño conditions are expected to intensify with an 85 percent probability and may continue into early 2027, potentially causing widespread flooding, displacement, and food insecurity, reminiscent of the severe 1997/98 event.
