Five tea factory employees have been arrested and charged in Konoin for allegedly manipulating weighing scales used to receive green leaf from growers, leading to significant losses for farmers.

Digital weighing machines were found to display weights that were up to 1.7 kilogrammes below the actual weight of green leaf.
Four suspects denied the charges and were released on a Sh20,000 bond, while one clerk pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year in prison or a Sh10,000 fine.
The crackdown, a joint operation by the Tea Board of Kenya (TBK), Weights and Measures Department, and police, was prompted by years of complaints from farmers about under-recorded deliveries.
