Delayed harmonization of standards across Africa is significantly hindering intra-African trade, increasing costs, and slowing the movement of goods, according to experts and officials. This lack of unified standards obstructs the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

• Intra-Africa trade currently stands at a low 17 percent, compared to much higher rates on other continents.
• Key organizations involved include the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
• The goal is to achieve "one standard, one test, and one certificate" accepted across the continent to facilitate easier movement of products and boost the competitiveness of African businesses and SMEs.
