Kenyan authorities are cracking down on a growing trade in fake alcohol that poses severe health risks to consumers. Recent operations have uncovered syndicates exploiting high demand, particularly during festive seasons.

• 19 per cent of alcohol sold in Kenya is counterfeit, according to the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA).
• The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recently arrested a suspect in Eldoret linked to a syndicate that could have sold counterfeit drinks worth Sh7.6 million.
• Underground distributors often refill popular brand bottles with dangerous substances like industrial ethanol and methanol, bypassing safety standards and leading to acute poisoning and organ failure.
