A fresh parliamentary push aims to allow diaspora Kenyans to vote using their national identity cards (IDs) instead of just passports, potentially expanding electoral inclusivity for the 2027 General Election.

The National Assembly Committee on Constitutional Implementation Oversight (CIOC) proposed recognizing the national ID as a valid voting document for overseas Kenyans.
Currently, only a valid passport is accepted for diaspora voter registration, except for those within the East African Community.
This change could benefit the estimated over 5 million Kenyans living abroad, with significant populations in the United States and the United Kingdom.
